Tbis story* deals with the nobleman known in Brazil as Maurício Conde de Nassau, and in the Netherlands as Johan Mauríts of Nassau-Siegen (1604-1679), a near kinsman of the princes· of Orange-Nassau called Mauríts (1567-1625) and Frederíck Henry, bis brother (1584-1647). These princes, under the modest title of stadhouder (lieutenant), occupied an almost royal position in the Dutch Republic.[...]
