Marie Curie’s visit to Rio de Janeiro in 1926 and the Brazilian press

Science was the object of interest of Brazilian press during the 1920’s, in a context in which popular science activities were on the rise in that country. Our objective in this case study is to show how both science and the scientists were presented in Brazilian press at that time. We have analyzed how Marie Curie’s visit to Rio de Janeiro in 1926 was covered by five Brazilian newspapers. Experimental science and its applications were shown in a positive perspective in those texts. Marie Curie was portrayed as a clever, stubborn and modest woman. Her virtues are shown as a supporting argument to the equality of gender.

The research of aerosols in the State of Bahia (Brazil)

The research project on the Physics of atmospheric aerosols, in the State of Bahia (Brazil) developed in the beginning of the 1970’s by a group of researchers of the Laboratory of Weak Radioactivities (current Laboratory of Applied Nuclear Physics), of the IF-UFBa, aims to analyze the possible causes that had induced its discontinuity later. It is noticeable the importance of that research, which had been precursory in Brazil in the search of a systematic study of the origin and chemical composition of atmospheric precipitations in the region of Recôncavo and at the Basin of the Paraguaçu-Bahia. One another excellent aspect of that would be the possibility of comparing the experimental data in the future, which would serve as a story of the evolution of the environment conditions.

The aim of the present work is to discuss some aspects that contributed to the complete deactivation of the aerosols’ research group, as well as, to some facts that had perhaps led all its members to given it up and move to other research areas, despite the well-known relevance of the mentioned project.

The anatomical and surgical studies in the Portuguese medicine of century XVIII

One of the aspects that have contributed to development of medicine was the approach between the doctors and the surgeons, which contributed to the anatomy studies. However, the medicine in Portugal had been separated from surgery for a long time. This article tries to understand some aspects that marked the valorization of the surgical and anatomical knowledge in the Portuguese medicine in the eighteen century.

Between “dead nature” and living culture

The natural museums are characterized by their attachment to projects related to scientific collection, research and nature classification. The constitution of modern scientific memory added to the cult requirements to nation identity, by means of empiric objectification, allows that museums develop preservation resources and the exposition of natural and cultural life from ‘still life’. This article deals with the tension between still life and live culture present in the objectification of the constituent empiric which makes part of the museums collections of natural history.

This article analyzes the influence of positivism and evolutionism on the literary work of Euclides da Cunha making a relativization of the idea that Euclides da Cunha was essentially positivist. With this work, we intend to understand how this memory that associates, almost exclusively, Euclides da Cunha to positivism was created and who were the social agents involved in this construction.

Esta dissertação tem como objetivo apresentar as idéias de Werner Heisenberg (1901- 1976) sobre a natureza das transformações advindas com a física moderna. As teorias da relatividade e a mecânica quântica geraram graves debates sobre a relação entre os seus novos conceitos e aqueles pertencentes à física clássica, entre teoria e experiência, sobre o papel que então deteriam conceitos antes julgados como fundamentais, tais como os de espaço, tempo, propriedades e causalidade. Diante de uma série de ataques, particularmente formulados pelos representantes do movimento intitulado Física Ariana, Heisenberg demonstra diferentes modos com os quais as ciências exatas lidam com a sua história, ao mesmo tempo em que analisa as formas pelas quais esses conceitos influenciam nas mais variadas atividades humanas.

O pensamento de Paul Feyerabend sobre a ciência e suas relações com a sociedade à luz do pluralismo e do relativismo

Paul Feyerabend (1924-1994) foi um dos filósofos que, a partir da década de 1960, apresentou um novo olhar sobre a ciência e suas relações com a sociedade. Feyerabend reviu o método científico tal como era elaborado até então e fez uso dos conceitos de relativismo e pluralismo a fim de defender a perspectiva segundo a qual o cientista deveria ver-se desobrigado a utilizar uma única metodologia preestabelecida. Tal perspectiva também incluía o questionamento acerca da concepção de ciência que cada metodologia pressupunha, o que levou Feyerabend a fazer uma análise crítica do papel exercido pela ciência nas sociedades atuais. O relativismo e o pluralismo, estendidos a essa questão, implicam uma crítica da absorção do conhecimento e das práticas científicas em vários segmentos da sociedade sem qualquer avaliação prévia desta última quanto ao real desejo ou necessidade de incorporá-los. Por outro lado, práticas e conhecimentos de outras tradições também poderiam ser incorporados pela ciência e vice-versa. No fundo, o que há na defesa do relativismo e do pluralismo é um ideal de democracia, no qual diferentes formas de conhecimento devem ser igualmente conhecidas e escolhidas pelos cidadãos de uma sociedade, sem que haja qualquer privilégio de uma sobre as demais.
