Abstract

The invention of electric telegraphy and its expansion through the world were the highest scientific and technological accomplishments of the XIX century. This article presents and analyses the beginning of electric telegraphy in Brazil during the second empire, with focus on terrestrial lines constructed by the Telegraph Office, under direction of Guilherme Schüch de Capanema. It is shown the development of telegraphic lines during the first years and the effect of Paraguay‘s War over the extension of this lines.
