Abstract
The aim of this paper is to briefly describe the book Géométrie de position (1803) by the French politician and mathematician Lazare Camot (1753-1823) and to comment on some controversial points raised conceming the text. This work, defined by Carnot himself as a "theo,y o/ negative quantities", was one ofthe principal influences on Jean-Victor Poncelet (1788-1867), who with the publication in 1822 o/ the Tmité des J1rQPriétés projectives des figures "founded a discipline that was central to of the 19th. centu,y mathematics, namely projective geometry.
