Abstract

ln this paper we have reconstructed the history of a part of the corre­spondence from Theodoro A. Ramos( 1895-1936) to lélio Gama( 1892-1981 ), two Brazil­ian mathematicians. For this purpose we have made use of unpublished letters from the lélio Gama archives, conserved in the MAST/CNPq. The history of the correspondence above clarifies some developments in the teaching of mathematics in Brazilian institu­tions located in Rio de Janeiro-São Paulo regions, toward the first half of the 20th century before 1934. The personalities of these two scientists helped create a permanent positive effect on a whole generation of Brazilian mathematicians.
