A cultura científica e a gazeta do Rio de Janeiro (1808-1821)
Abstract
This work deals with the role that "A Gazeta do Rio de Janeiro" played in the constitution of Brazilian scientific culture under the govemment of Don John VI (1808-1821). "A Gazeta do Rio de Janeiro" - thefirst newspaper published in Brazil -contributed to some extend to the development of taste for scientific knowledge within the Brazilian society. Although a Gazeta was not a scientific periodic it published a rekvant material on the subject. This work will also analyze one article published in this newspaper: the speech by Georges Leopold Cuvier titled "Reflection on the current development of science and its relationship with society "(1816) which can be considered Íhe first article of Sociology of Science ( or Science Policy) published and translated to Portuguese in Brazil.
