Abstract

This work deals with the role that "A Gazeta do Rio de Janeiro" played in the constitution of Brazilian scientific culture under the govemment of Don John VI (1808-1821). "A Gazeta do Rio de Janeiro" - thefirst newspaper published in Brazil -contributed to some extend to the development of taste for scientific knowledge within the Brazilian society. Although a Gazeta was not a scientific periodic it published a rekvant material on the subject. This work will also analyze one article published in this newspaper: the speech by Georges Leopold Cuvier titled "Reflection on the current development of science and its relationship with society "(1816) which can be consid­ered Íhe first article of Sociology of Science ( or Science Policy) published and trans­lated to Portuguese in Brazil.
