Abstract

This study is based on the foundation that the architectural form is a type of knowledge where scientific and artistic ideas are mutually conjugated. In any period of history that we study architectural form and space will consciously or unconsciously materialize the mental structure of a cultural system. Pursuing these hypotheses, the research was developed with the main objective of relating the dialectic between tradition and innovation in the process of generating architectural forms. Through the investigation of the architecture produced in Rio de Janeiro between 1930 and 1957, the research demonstrated how the incorporation of images and past experiences were transformed and reformulated, serving as support points from which new architectural forms emerged. Although modern architecture is theoretically supported by an anti-traditionalist discourse of total rupture with the past, we observe that, in practice, the discourse materialized in an idealistic and more ambiguous and dynamic way of fear. By reformulating values and reestablishing references, modern architects have recreated forms, demonstrating that tradition and innovation are not conceptually opposed, they are not always evident and clearly explicit: from forms, forms are born.
