Abstract

This article aims to describe a very long polemic which affected the Brazilian astronomy at the end of the 19th century til the beginning the next one. Manuel Pereira Reis, professor of astronomy at the Escola Politécnica (RJ), strongly argued against the scientific competence of the directors of the Imperial Observatório do Rio de Janeiro, Emmanuel Liais e Luiz Cruls. The hetaed debate occurred in scientific and cultural milieu which could not support and improve strongly pure scientific projects. Therefore, it was not possible for both opposite camps to find a solution for their divergence.
