Abstract

The acceptation of Santo Ildefonso Treatise, in 1777, between Portugal and Spain took new hope in what concerns tlze possibility of procecding with the dcmarcntion work of lhe sonth and northwest frontiers of Brazil. The need for good astronomers and experts was conjugated with lhe necessity of good and precise mathematical and phisical instruments that would pennit the attainment of that commitment. John Hyacinth de Magellan was the main contact betwcen lhe Iberian courts that were in good relation since then. and the fiourishing British market of instruments which the fonner knew as an expert, and the acquisition of mathcmatical and physical instruments need for those demarcations.
