This article presents the professional journey of Fábio Hostílio de Moraes Rego, engineer. This journey coincided with the process of institutionalizing the national field of professional engineering, covering the period at the end of the Empire and birth of the Republic, as well as the creation of institutions such as the Polytechnic Institute and, later, the Engineering Club. Given Moraes Rego’s trajectory, I will discuss a number of themes in particular, such as: the implantation of railroads, improvement of the ports and sanitation in rural areas.
