Abstract

The traveling instructions were considered essential to produce knowledge and control the scientific travels far from the cabinets of scientific institutes. This paper purpose is to compare the traveling instruction followed by the Philosophical Travels (1777-1822) and the Comissão Científica de Exploração (1856-1861), whose investigated scientifically the Brazilian field. Many elements were found in common between the scientific travels and instructions over the time, and we concluded that, beside the particularities of each period, studying nature and scientific travels were always a link with government interest.
