Abstract

The purpose of the present article is to analyze the creation of the “Sociedade de Geografia do Rio de Janeiro” (Rio de Janeiro Geographical Society) in 1883, as well as to picture its member composition and reveal its main activities until 1909, facts inferred by the reading of its specialized periodic. This society, inspired by European models (mainly Paris), was created in the end of the imperial period and intended to become a space devoted to the preservation and expansion of the Brazilian geographical knowledge, a major issue to all of its associates civil and military engineers, lawyers and physicians.
