Abstract

This paper is pursuing the meaning of geography throughout the empire’s last years. To achieve that we focused both on the performance of the Seção da Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa no Brasil concerning its social structure, and, particularly on the analysis of the periodicals published by this branch. From 1881 to 1886, the span of its distribution and, along with the successives Section’s board of directors, one can notice that the editorial profile of the Revista da Seção da Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa no Brasil, has experienced a change, led by differents perspectives for geography, among them, the Portuguese aspiration to involved Brazil into the quarrels for Africa. The new republican political circumstances, however, ended up by thwarting the Portuguese project where Brazil would be seen as an Iberian extension, voiding therefore the very role of the Section.
