Resumen

The commonly held view is that Camot's "Réflexions" had practically no influence on its publication in 1824 and for another 23 years, until rediscovered by Thomson. However recent research (Redondi) showed its influence on French engineers, manifested in projects of "tire" (hot air) engines. Some were built, but were not practical. Camot made no impression on French academic science, due to bis style and to what amounted to a dissenting paradigm. His is an engineer's discourse grounded on new physical ideas. Carnot signals a convergence of the history of science with the history of technology. Camot's predecessors work on hot air en????nes is reviewed.
