Entre o céu e o Sena: o “Santos-Dumont no 18” como síntese do processo de desenvolvimento náutico e aeronáutico na Belle Époque

Resumo

Nos anos que antecederam a eclosão da Primeira Guerra Mundial, a cidade de Paris foi palco de prodigiosos avanços tecnológicos nos veículos de locomoção motorizados, onde o brasileiro Alberto Santos Dumont encontrou um ambiente adequado ao estímulo de sua inventividade e concretização de seus projetos. Em particular, esta Belle Époque foi marcada por uma forte interação entre o desenvolvimento náutico e aeronáutico, especialmente manifesta pelas comunidades da motonáutica e da aviação. Neste artigo, analisa-se tal relação a partir do projeto no 18 de Alberto Santos Dumont: um hidroplano de 1907, testado no rio Sena, com o qual pretendia atingir a velocidade de 100 km/h na água. Trata-se de uma máquina pouco estudada e insatisfatoriamente descrita por fontes históricas secundárias, talvez por não ter alcançado a meta proposta e ser o único veículo aquático do inventor brasileiro, célebre por seus dirigíveis e aviões. Assim, este trabalho também cumpre o objetivo de reintegrar o “Santos-Dumont no 18” ao panorama geral da motonáutica europeia no início do século XX, salientando suas características inovadoras e compatibilidade com os anseios tecnológicos e práticas sociais da Belle Époque.
