os cometas do século XVII e a parenética do Novo Mundo

As observações dos numerosos cometas do século XVII foram bastante importantes no desenvolvimento da Astronomia moderna. O uso desse fenômeno por parte dos pregadores na elaboração de seus sermões expõe de forma bastante clara as opções confessionais dos religiosos e o sentido das ocorrências celestes para as populações. Ao final do século, António Vieira, jesuíta em Salvador, e Increase Mather, puritano em Boston, compuseram sermões vigorosos a propósito da passagem de cometas pelos céus, ambos chamaram-nos “voz de Deus” e uma comparação direta entre os dois sermões evidencia sentidos bastante diferentes das pregações.
