Abstract

It aims to discuss the development of scientific knowledge about soil fertility in Brazil, especially in the coffee plantations in the state of São Paulo and the “campos Cerrados”, led by IRI Research Institute (IRI) researches during the 1950´s. IRI, a division of AIA, a privately established non-profit agency funded by Nelson Rockefeller in 1946, researched in agriculture aiming to develop practical methods and equipment to deal with Brazilian soil – similar as American’s Dust Bowl – and its reports and conclusions over nature and territory influenced the agricultural politics which produced dramatic changes on the Brazilian environment.
