Abstract

Martha Vannucci (1921- ) was a scientist who devoted herself to the study of biological oceanography by acting at the Oceanographic Institute of the University of São Paulo. Her scientific activities has made a significant contribution to the process of institutionalization of oceanographic sciences in Brazil. This text is only a preliminary attempt to write about her career at that institutional loci, trying to set her up in a broader contexts related to the consolidation of scientific practices in Brazil, and the situation of the women who look for establishing themselves in the science field, in the period of the 40s to the 60s of the 20th century.
