We present the Portuguese Jewish medical doctor Amato Lusitano (1511-1568) in the framework of the scientific culture of his time, pointing out in particular the relation of his work with that of the Belgian physician Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564), considered the founder of modern medicine. We also refer to the citations made by another contemporary Portuguese Jewish physician, Garcia da Orta (1500-1568), to Amato and Vesalius.
