If we analyze the European colonization processes in Portuguese America, we can notice the several obstacles that the first settlers had to win. It is relevant, while considering the colonization of “terras dos brasis”, to think about the construction of knowledge undertaken by the European pioneers. To this objective, we need to understand the universe of maladies that threatened the colonizers as well as the tools that were available to cure them. Thus, we propose to use a multidisciplinary approach in order to analyze historical sources that contain information about the use of sea food resources which were used by the first settlers and explorers as remedies against the tropical diseases.
