Abstract

The main concern of this research is a study on Astronomy, developed by the Portuguese Jesuits in the middle of the eighteenth century from the works of Santo Antão teachers, particularly Eusébio da Veiga. The publishing of the Jesuit Eusébio da Veiga’s Planetario Lusitano in 1758 in Portugal was our starting point. Veiga was a teacher for the “Aula da Esfera” at the Colégio Santo Antão in Lisbon between the years of 1753 and 1759. For the development of this dissertation, we will approach the cultural and political context in Portugal during the period in which Veiga has produced his work. Other writings from the “Aula da Esfera” teachers and authors inserted within the European scientific context were also used, given that they allow us not only to further comprehend the Planetario Lusitano’s content but also to understand the backdrop of the Jesuits role in the Portuguese Astronomy field.
