Abstract

In Brazil, the XIXth century was marked by scientific expeditions that unveiled the territory in search of discoveries that contributed to the development of science and the modernization of the nation. Amongst the men of science was the traveler artist, in charge of the iconographic production that illustrated the travel reports. The images created by those artists formed a imagetic repertoire that translated the New World to the European men. Such representations are here analyzed not only as individual impressions on the scenery unveiled during the travels, but as essential tools to historic and scientific research.
