This paper discusses the development of a private association occupied with the practice and dissemination of Geography to understand the academic institutionalization of this discipline. Trough the examination of the choices Pierre Monbeig made when he was the president of the Association of Brazilian Geographers (AGB), the article focuses on some of his writings about the pioneer fringe and inquires on the relationship established between the historical context of scientific discourses and the actions intended to modify the spatial configuration of Brazilian territory in early twentieth century.
