This article analyzes the academic activities and initiatives promoted by the Geographical Society of Rio de Janeiro during the period that goes from the establishment of the republican regime until the early decades of the twentieth century. The institution created in the late nineteenth century helped promulgate, as well as it invented patriotism. Their projects encouraged civic sentiments while they attempted to unveil Brazil to the Brazilian people.
