Abstract

This article examines the role played by the Revista Brasileira de Geografia, edited by the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) since 1939 as one of the most important vehicle for modernizing the geographic field, between the 1940s and 1970s. Since its first issues, the publication had a twolevel scope, in both pragmatic and academic grounds. Those included the promotion of territorial policies, as well as the dissemination of the new methodology related to the discipline’s teaching and research. By exploring the editorial strategies of the journal, this article analyzes the profiles of its authors and associates and the diversification of its scientific production, in order to outline the contribution of this publication to the process of professionalization of geography.
