Abstract

The paper analyzes the institutionalization process of the psychology at the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA). Comprise the period beginning in the 1940s, when the Faculdade de Filosofia da Bahia (FFB) was founded and the inclusion of psychology in their licentiate degree courses, and ends in 1980, encompassing the formation process of the psychology course at UFBA, in 1968, the initial demand, the faculty and the historical context. The article demonstrates that the course mainly served the urban and female middle class and represented the possibility of exercising an autonomous and socially ascending profession, at that time, within the state of Bahia and the Northeast region of Brazil.
