Abstract

This article presents an overview of our study of the process of formation of the field of engineering in Brazil - and, in the same way, the formation of a vast gap in the History of Science. Through an extensive historiographical reference and primary and secondary sources, we seek to observe the constitution of scientific institutions, the circulation of techniques and scientific knowledge among them, as well as their agents, in a period of complexity of civil society and the Imperial State, and of the peak of coffee production and in the Vale do Paraíba Fluminense.
