This paper investigates a case study of the interplay between cultural milieu and theory selection in the history of physics in the 20th century. Geoffrey Chew, a physicist based at UC Berkeley, working at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and embedded in the Zeitgeist of the 1960s-70s, led the so-called S-Matrix Program, a theory which was believed would replace quantum field theory.
