Abstract

This article focuses on a critical analysis of the current conventional sanitation system, examining its historical process of consolidation and how concomitant technical alternatives have been underestimated or discredited. Based on the characteristics of the socio-technical context in which this system was established, it is argued that it is inadequate in the contemporary scenario. This inadequacy makes the system unsustainable, especially in terms of the use of resources, especially water. However, this issue is not addressed in most historical studies on the subject, as they often adopt a linear view that considers the system to be the culmination of a series of technical advances since antiquity.
