Resumen

O objetivo deste artigo é apontar e analisar os argumentos mais recorrentes sobre o consumo de café na Inglaterra seiscentista. Dentre as publicações sobre a bebida, priorizou-se o conjunto de obras escritas por médicos e boticários, ou por autores que abordaram diretamente as propriedades médicas do café em seus textos. Atrelado à discussão que apontava os benefícios e os inconvenientes do uso desse novo produto na Inglaterra, faz-se necessário dimensionar o espaço ocupado pelas imagens orientalistas, e o quanto tais representações sobre o Levante islâmico interferiram no debate sobre o consumo do café.
