Harriet Brooks e a tabela periódica
um caso para valorizar a participação feminina na história da ciência

Com o objetivo de dar visibilidade à atuação de mulheres na história da ciência, apresentamos um estudo de caso sobre a física canadense Harriet Brooks (1876-1933). Sob orientação de Ernest Rutherford, na Universidade McGill, ela investigou uma emanação advinda do elemento rádio que se comportava como um gás pesado. Seu estudo, descrito no artigo “O novo gás do rádio” (1901), teria contribuído para o entendimento de fenômenos ligados ao decaimento radioativo e se conecta ao processo de descoberta do elemento radônio. Além das produções científicas, o caso de Brooks permite explicitar questões de gênero que se colocam como obstáculos ao prosseguimento da carreira de mulheres cientistas.
