Abstract

São Paulo took the highest place in coffee production along First Republic (1889-1930), founding research institutes for studying coffee plant, as Instituto Agronômico de Campinas, and economics policies for commercialize the product, as operations to increase coffee value started with Convênio de Taubaté (1906) and a coffee price valorization policy permanent, since 1924. These efforts were aimed to combat instability between supply and demand caused by coffee overproduction, presented since last decade of 19th century. The aim of this paper is to analyze the economic and science and technology measures, trying to understand the relations formed between both in this period.
