Abstract

This paper analyzes Santos-Dumont’s reputation in Europe and the United States of America between 1898 and 1904. The research intends to study the development of his public image based on newspapers published in his day. It also presents distinct readings and explanations about his experiences with airships. The investigation offers an opportunity to understand the Brazilian entrepreneur’s career, fame and public image as they unfolded across several countries. It also demonstrates the tensions and conflicts in the diverse aspects of this same personality: the hero, the aeronaut, the scientist and the adventurer.
