The objective is to present some reflections on the scandal of phosphoethanolamine, or “cancer pill”, whose promise of cure without due clinical tests involved Brazil in a heated discussion from 2014 onwards. Based on a methodology subordinated to the variety of sources used, such as news stories, explanatory notes from institutions involved, videos and court documents, we intend to interpret historically the repercussions in the use of this substance. As a result, we observed that history, despite having little explored the subject, can contribute to an interdisciplinary relationship to the public debate on scientific controversies in Brazil in recent times.
