This article analyzes an intellectual phenomenon – positive psychology – based on the relationships it establishes between university disciplinary hierarchies and other platforms of consecration. Through an analysis of the status of positive psychology and its institutional history, the article aims to contextualize the challenges that such a project imposes not only on theoretical debates in the field of psychology, but also on the boundaries between university and market. Therefore, the institutionalization processes of positive psychology in the United States and Brazil were taken into account, as well as the criticisms made in both contexts.
