Abstract

This article deals with the university education of José Vieira de Faria Aragão Ataliba (1804-1853), a physician and professor at the Medicine Faculty of Bahia in the nineteenth century. The investigation, based on comparative education and the history of science, was the result of researches carried out in archives and libraries in Coimbra and Lisbon. The documentary research is inserted in the modal biography genre, with time período extending from 1820 to 1827. The sources comprise periodicals, academic records, and subject memories. They allowed us to understand how certain customs, and cultural and scientific habits were acquired by Ataliba, who subsequently contributed with proposals for urban sanitation in Bahia.
