This paper analyzes the approaches to teaching the subject of Brazilian flora in twelve secondary school biology textbooks. We established that the textbooks, for the most part, introduce and discuss more exotic plants than native species, many of which are referred to solely by their common names; they present an insufficient number of illustrations; and native plants are rarely identified as such. In only half of the books some historical information is included, and this only in one or few chapters, while emphasis is given to episodes referring to the present reduced biodiversity of Brazilian biomes.
